The first all-American monoplane was designed, built, and successfully flown at this location by brothers Arthur and Albert Heinrich. The project was developed at the site now occupied by the Plaza Elementary School on Seaman Avenue and Rockville Drive. In the plane's initial and subsequent models, its unique designs featured controls that were combined into one stick, which allowed the pilot to fly the plane using one hand. Shortly after Hempstead separated from Queens County in 1899, people began to move to "Beautiful Baldwin", as it was called by Charles Luerssen, a village realtor. By 1939, ten years after the opening of Sunrise Highway, Baldwin became the largest unincorporated village in New York State—a title that was lost to Levittown by 1960. Original inhabitants of the area between Parsonage Creek near Oceanside and Milburn Creek near Freeport were Native Americans known as the Meroke, or Merrick, a band of Lenape people who were indigenous to most of the South Shore of Long Island.

FOLKS is concerned that the lake area is becoming over–developed, with too many houses or developments, which may interfere with the overall beauty of the lake. Lake Keowee has a reputation for having excellent water quality. It was established in 1993 to represent the interests of lake residents in terms of environmental and recreational issues.

In 1967, the firms of Blythe Brothers and Clement Brothers were hired to begin earth-moving operations. During this first phase of construction, dams were built on the Keowee and Little Rivers to create Lake Keowee. Simultaneously, a dam blocking the Jocassee River created Lake Jocassee, which feeds into Lake Keowee. In the end three dams were built, of which Lake Keowee dam was the longest at 3,500 feet in length and 800 feet wide at its base. The initial transfer of water began in December 1973 and commercial operation on December 19, 1973. Lake Keowee began in 1971 as an impressively large building project, including the construction of two large dams, the Keowee and Little River Dams. Lake Keowee collects waters from the Keowee and Little Rivers and the outflows from the respective dams join to form the Seneca River, which feeds into the Savannah River. The Lake Keowee water helps to cool Duke Energy’s nuclear reactors within the Oconee Nuclear Generating Station, as well as helps to generate hydroelectric power. Lake Keowee real estate is the second largest market for lake homes and land in South Carolina. Severe winds, ice and snow have also upended commercial air traffic during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Children who reside within Baldwin and attend public schools go to school in one of these districts depending on where in the hamlet they live. Of all households, 18.5% were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.40.
